Painting is at the heart of this exhibition, which jointly presents the works of Australian Jordy Kerwick and Chilean Humberto Poblete-Bustamante.
Colour and material are the main tools with which Jordy Kerwick composes his scenes inspired by everyday life but incorporating animals, often ferocious, and many other imaginary elements. The artist deconstructs figurative subjects to their rawest dimension, revealing "a subject in its most sincere state". A wild force emanates from his compositions whose bold aura is encouraged by a raw line and explosive colours. In this two-dimensional space, accentuated by the fact that Kerwick flattens the perspective, different techniques are mixed and layered, from acrylic paint to oil as well as spray paint or collage, offering an abundance of textures. The central subject is frequently enriched with figurative pictorial elements that give the works a deeper, sometimes complementary, sometimes more ambivalent reading. The eye wanders between unambiguous figuration and meticulously precise details.
Humberto Poblete-Bustamante gets rid of any limitation that a particular subject might suggest, thus navigating in the purest dimension of painting. The surface of the canvas is occupied by flat areas that take on various forms, without precise contours. In no way do these forms attempt to be familiar or geometric, they are not recognisable. They are the materialization of the artist's flashes of inspiration, guided by the act of painting. In the course of the creative process, the forms evolve and transform, one layer of paint replaced by another. The raw and rapid brushstrokes emphasise the instantaneous and dynamic expression of action. The works in this series, mostly in oil, are framed by the fluorescently coloured undercoats of acrylic. In Poblete-Bustamante's paintings, there is no error: accident and chance, facilitated by the artist's gesture, are an integral part of the work. It is an ode to painting.
Kerwick and Poblete-Bustamante are brought together in an exhibition whose title, Le singe qui transpire (The Sweating Monkey), evokes the playful yet intense aspect of both artists' work. Both allow themselves to be guided by the physicality of the paint, the colours and the unexpected. This free and instinctive improvisation creates lively works that reflect the ever-changing aspect of life. Spontaneous and unfiltered, like the title of the exhibition, the works of Kerwick and Poblete-Bustamante invite us to dare to lose ourselves in the tangible world of painting.

La peinture est au cœur de cette exposition qui présente conjointement les œuvres de l’australien Jordy Kerwick et du chilien Humberto Poblete-Bustamante.
La couleur et la matière sont les outils principaux grâce auquels Jordy Kerwick compose ses scènes inspirées de la vie quotidienne mais intégrant des animaux, souvent féroces, et bien d’autres éléments imaginaires. L’artiste déconstruit les sujets figuratifs jusqu'à leur dimension la plus brute, révélant ainsi « un sujet dans son état le plus sincère ». Une force sauvage émane de ses compositions dont l’aura audacieuse est encouragée par un trait brut et des couleurs explosives. Dans cet espace bidimensionnel, accentué par le fait que Kerwick aplatisse les perspectives, se mélangent et se superposent différentes techniques allant de la peinture acrylique à l’huile en passant par l’aérosol ou le collage, offrant ainsi une abondance de textures. Le sujet central est fréquemment enrichi d’éléments picturaux figuratifs qui apportent aux œuvres une lecture plus profonde, quelquefois complémentaire, parfois plus ambivalente. L’œil se promène entre figuration sans ambages et détails d’une précision minutieuse.
Humberto Poblete-Bustamante se débarrasse de toute limitation qu’un sujet particulier pourrait suggérer, naviguant ainsi dans la dimension la plus pure de la peinture. La surface de la toile est occupée par des aplats qui prennent diverses formes, sans contours précis. En aucun cas, ces formes ne tentent d’être familières ou géométriques, on ne saurait les reconnaître. Elles sont la matérialisation des fulgurances de l’artiste, guidé par l’acte de peindre. Au cours du processus de création, les formes évoluent et se transforment, une couche de peinture remplacée par une autre. La touche brute et rapide insiste sur l’expression instantanée et dynamique de l’action. Les œuvres de cette série, principalement à l'huile, sont encadrées par les couches inférieures aux teintes fluorescentes de l’acrylique. Dans les tableaux de Poblete-Bustamante, il n’y a pas d’erreur : l’accident et les aléas, facilités par le geste de l’artiste, font partie intégrante de l’oeuvre. C’est une ode à la peinture.
Kerwick et Poblete-Bustamante sont réunis dans une exposition dont le titre, Le singe qui transpire, évoque l’aspect à la fois ludique et intense du travail des deux artistes. Tous deux se laissent guidés par la physicalité de la peinture, les couleurs et les imprévus. Cette improvisation, libre et instinctive, engendre des œuvres animées qui reflètent l’aspect toujours changeant de la vie. Spontanées et sans filtre, comme le titre de l’exposition, les œuvres de Kerwick et Poblete-Bustamante invitent à oser se perdre dans le monde tangible de la peinture.
